On the fateful evening of November 9, Lt Jager assumed command of the checkpoint at about 6pm after his superior officer went home.

Although he knew of the wave of anti-government demonstrations that had erupted in East German cities in the previous weeks, he had no inkling of what was to come.

His world was turned upside down less than an hour later when Gunter Schabowski, the normally assured spokesman for the ruling politburo, announced on television that travel restrictions would be eased and East Germans permitted to cross the border “effective immediately, without delay”.
